Procedure:
If you have developed facial and neck wrinkles,
if you think you always appear tired, or if the
muscles in your face and neck seem droopy or less
toned than they once were, you can achieve a more
rested and youthful look with a facelift. The technique
involves tightening muscles, redraping and lifting
skin, and finally removing excess skin.
Facelifts can often be tailored
to each patient’s individual needs, facial
shape and features. They range from “mini”
to “standard” depending on where the
problem area is most heavily located, on elasticity
of the skin, and of course on the patient’s
goals. For a more enhanced result, a facelift can
often be combined with other facial plastic surgery
procedures, such as a forehead or brow lift, a rhinoplasty
(nose job), a neck or chin lift, or a blepharoplasty
(eyelid surgery).
Our cosmetic surgeon in Oklahoma
generally makes the facelift incision
within the hairline above the ear, extends it behind
the lobe, and completes it within or below the hairline
behind the ear.
Length of Procedure:
Usually at least 2 or more hours, though it depends
on how extensive a procedure you’re having
Anesthesia:
Local anesthesia with sedation, or under general
anesthesia
In/Outpatient:
Outpatient
Risks:
Major complications are rare, though all surgical
procedures may carry some degree of risk. Specific
potential risks can’t be determined for any
given individual until a doctor in Oklahoma has
been able to meet with the patient to evaluate the
situation and prior health conditions.
Some potential risks can include
hematoma, temporary damage to facial nerves, infection,
or, what would more likely be a risk to smokers,
insufficient healing.
Keeping an open line of communication
with your surgeon, throughout your facelift experience,
can greatly reduce any potential risks.
Recovery:
Minimal initial discomfort is easily controlled
with oral medication
Back to work: Within 14 days
Strenuous activity: 14-20 days
Final appearance: Within 4-6 weeks, potential for
improvement continues for several months
Duration of results:
Because gravity and the effects of aging are unavoidable,
you may wish to repeat the procedure, or a variation
on it, perhaps 5-10 years later. However, that decade
or so of aging will be much less difficult to deal
with after having had the facial plastic surgery
than if you had never treated the situation in the
first place.
